Buckthorn Work Party!
Join us at the Ragotzke Forest (maple syrup operation north of Duluth) for a buckthorn work party! Buckthorn is a VERY invasive shrub that quickly outcompetes native plants and trees. Dave has been doing his best to keep buckthorn out of this beautiful woodland for over 20 years, and you can tell! The plant and fungal diversity is astounding, compared to many woodlands in the area. Still, buckthorn is a constant battle, and it will be a joy to come together and see how “many hands make light work”! We’ll be hand-pulling small seedlings and weed-wrenching larger ones. No chemicals.
- You will:

- Learn how to identify, remove, and manage buckthorn.
- Gain hands-on experience in environmental stewardship.
- Get your questions answered regarding invasive species and restoration opportunities in your own lands/communities. Both Sarah Foltz Jordan (conservation biologist/ forager) and Lori Seele (forester/ invasive species expert) will be on-site for the event.
- Share the joy of working, observing, laughing and singing with fellow foragers/land-stewards (we’re going to teach you an amazing 3-part round for pulling buckthorn!).
- Visit with and learn from extraordinary local food producers and forest stewards. You will also have the opportunity to buy local maple syrup, apples, and salmon on site! https://simplegiftssyrupandsalmon.com/
- No promises– and we can’t get toooo distracted— but THERE WILL LIKELY BE MUSHROOMS, and Sarah will talk you through whatever we find.
