{"id":357,"date":"2026-09-15T14:51:19","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T19:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conservationforaging.com\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=357"},"modified":"2026-09-16T09:52:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T14:52:41","slug":"buckthorn-work-party","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/conservationforaging.com\/?tribe_events=buckthorn-work-party","title":{"rendered":"Buckthorn Work Party!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Join us at the <strong>Ragotzke Forest<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/simplegiftssyrupandsalmon.com\/\">maple syrup operation north of Duluth<\/a>) for a buckthorn work party!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><strong>Buckthorn is a <i style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">VERY<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> invasive shrub that quickly outcompetes native plants and trees<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Dave has been doing his best to keep buckthorn out of this beautiful woodland for over 20 years, and you can tell! The <strong>plant and fungal diversity is astounding<\/strong>, compared to many woodlands in the area. Still, <strong>buckthorn is a constant battle,<\/strong> and it will be a joy to come together and see how &#8220;<strong>many hands make light work&#8221;<\/strong>! <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">We&#8217;ll be hand-pulling small seedlings and weed-wrenching larger ones. No chemicals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>You will:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn how to<strong> identify, remove, and manage buckthorn<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gain hands-on experience in <strong>environmental stewardship<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get your questions answered regarding<strong> invasive species and restoration opportunities<\/strong> in your own lands\/communities. Both <strong>Sarah Foltz Jordan<\/strong> (conservation biologist\/ forager) and <strong>Lori Seele<\/strong> (forester\/ invasive species expert) will be on-site for the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share the joy of <strong>working, observing, laughing and singing with fellow foragers\/land-stewards<\/strong>\u00a0(we&#8217;re going to teach you an amazing<strong> 3-part round for pulling buckthorn!<\/strong>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"2\">Visit with and learn from <strong>extraordinary local food producers and forest stewards.<\/strong> You will also have the opportunity to <strong>buy local maple syrup, apples, and salmon<\/strong> on site!\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/simplegiftssyrupandsalmon.com\/\">https:\/\/simplegiftssyrupandsalmon.com\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"2\">No promises&#8211; and we can&#8217;t get toooo distracted&#8212; but <strong>THERE WILL LIKELY BE MUSHROOMS<\/strong>, and Sarah will talk you through whatever we find.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a free, volunteer event.
