A Shared Harvest: Habitat to Nourish both People and Wildlife

December 10 @ 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us for this annual Women in Ag Night organized by Sherburne County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to celebrate the role of women in farming and farm-land stewardship! Sarah will be presenting an hour-long talk as part of the evening.

A Shared Harvest: Habitat to Nourish both People and Wildlife.  Native flowering habitat supports bees, butterflies, and birds—but it doesn’t stop there– these same plantings (and some of the weeds that invade them) can also provide amazing nutrition for you and your family. In this talk, we’ll consider how thoughtful plant selection, habitat design, and ongoing management can create spaces on your farm that nourish wildlife and people alike. Sarah will talk us through some of the best edible plants available for conservation plantings and how to incorporate them into our diets in creative ways. She’ll also cover important edible weeds that we can harvest for our own use during the process of caring for our habitat. Together, we’ll adjust our thinking on pollinator habitat from something we simply set aside for nature, to an integrated part of a healthy, productive, and resilient food system for all.

BIO: Sarah Foltz Jordan is a conservation biologist and foraging educator based in Duluth, MN. Through her pollinator work with the Xerces Society, she’s worked with hundreds of farmers across the region to design, install, and maintain successful native habitat plantings. She recently launched the Conservation Foraging Center, an initiative to bring more attention to the critical connection between giving stewardship and finding nourishment in wild spaces. She’s excited to return to her roots in the Anoka Sand Plains for this talk!
